This woodpecker, or sapsucker, looked sickly yesterday. Today, we noticed it dead at the base of the trunk. My kids wanted to take it home to look at it. They really wanted to keep it all weekend in order to bring it to their science teachers on Monday. We compromised on saving a few feathers and taking photos. I used to be squeamish around dead things. My kids have none of those sensibilities.
